Abrian Brown knew how hard it would be to attend college while his son was ready to go himself. That’s why he applied for the Foundations of East Chicago Scholarship in 2016.

“At the time that I applied I had one student who was graduating high school so I knew that it would be financially hard for us both to be in college,” Abrian said.

With the help of the FEC, Abrian was able to attend Waynesburg University, Indiana University South Bend and Lamar University. He received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a master’s degree in Special Education. In 2017, when he was preparing for the scholarship reception to see his son Anthony, he received his Principal Licensure in the mail.

“That made the day even more rewarding to know that because of the FEC scholarship I was able to earn my license.” Abrian has worked for the School City of East Chicago for over 21 years.

Abrian’s two sons, Anfernee and Anthony, were also FEC Scholarship recipients. Anfernee was a four-year recipient and attended Purdue West Lafayette, and Anthony received a one-year NonTraditional Scholarship.

“The Foundations of East Chicago has helped my family tremendously!” he said. He added that the scholarships weren’t just for high school seniors but for adults as well. “If you are a parent wanting to go back or finish school keep an eye out in the Fall for the application!”
