School is out and the weather is nice which means it is time to get outside in Northwest Indiana! One local organization that does so much for environmental education in the region is Dunes Learning Center.

Dunes Learning Center offers a variety of programs for kids, teens, and adults that all work to give Hoosiers a better understanding and appreciation for the natural environment of Northwest Indiana. Some of the programs take place at the center, which is located in Chesterton and allows visitors to experience the dunes, the lakeshore, the woodlands, and more. Other programs bring environmental educators to schools and camps across the region to discuss students’ local environment and things they can do at school and at home to help preserve it.

This year, the Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) awarded Dunes Learning Center a program grant for their Environmental Education Experiences for East Chicago Students. This program was a partnership between Dunes Learning Center and the School City of East Chicago that taught students all about their environment, community engagement, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) learning, and coming up with solutions to real-world environmental problems.

Dunes Learning Center offers a variety of summer programs to suit the needs and interests of every child in NWI. Some of those being offered this summer are as follows:

-Junior Counselor program

-Dunes Discovery Camps

-Dunes Adventure Camp

-Critter Camp

-Mighty Acorns Nature Camps
