  • East Chicago Resident Receives FEC Scholarships for Both Undergraduate and Graduate Degrees

Hundreds of students benefit from receiving Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) scholarships for their bachelor’s degrees. However, far fewer can say that they received both an FEC high school and non-traditional scholarship to further their education.

Alexandria Artis received an FEC scholarship when she graduated from Thea Bowman Leadership Academy in 2012. She used that to obtain a degree in Healthcare Management and Policy from Indiana University, which she completed in 2016.

“FEC scholarships have allowed me to have more time to focus on my studies, rather than working, and to ultimately graduate on time,” said Alexandria.

Graduating on time was important because Alexandria had big plans to continue her education and work towards a master’s degree in public health. After deciding on this path, Alexandria applied for the FEC non-traditional scholarship, a scholarship awarded to adult students who are continuing or furthering their education.

“I knew I wanted to continue my studies after undergrad in a Master’s program, so receiving more money for school would bring me one step closer to that goal,” said Alexandria.

She received the scholarship and was able to enroll in the graduate school at IU. Alexandria plans to complete her Master’s degree in May of 2018 and hopes to one day be able to use her degrees to help others, like FEC helped her.

“This scholarship has not only lessened the financial burden of obtaining a college education, but has taught me the importance of philanthropy,” she said. “I hope to one day be in a position to give back to young people in my community.”

For now, Alexandria encourages young East Chicagoans to apply for scholarships, get involved, and be leaders, as those things will help them to experience success in their futures.

“Continue to succeed academically, seek out leadership roles in your extracurricular activities, and be involved in the community. Being a well-rounded individual will contribute greatly to your higher education.”
