  • FEC Scholarship Recipient Plans to Pursue PhD and Give Back to the Community

Giving back to the community of East Chicago is what the Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) is all about. Marsalis Gibson, a Thea Bowman Leadership Academy alum and FEC scholarship recipient, also values giving back to his hometown, which is why he has made it a future goal of his.

Marsalis applied for a FEC scholarship toward the end of his high school career, and received one of the highest amounts given: a $6,000 award. He used this to begin his college journey at University of California – Berkeley.

“Because of the financial support that I have received, I have been able to focus on my academics and not worry about finding a job and other sources of funding,” said Marsalis.

Marsalis has one more year before he receives his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. After that, he will begin PhD work so that, one day, he can work on engineering projects with applications in health or urban development. It is then that he hopes to be able to use his success to give back to the community of East Chicago.

“I plan to give back and bring opportunities and resources back to East Chicago so that other students in my community can have the opportunities that I have been blessed with,” said Marsalis.

Marsalis also believes that more East Chicago students should take advantage of local opportunities and resources, like those presented by the FEC scholarship program.

“It’s important for them to take advantage of scholarships like this. Also, they need to make sure that they ask a lot of questions about what they need to do in the process to make sure their applications are the best that they can be.”

When Marsalis applied for his FEC scholarship, he received guidance from his mother, as well as the staff and administrators with the School City of East Chicago. He says that all students should reach out for help when it is needed.
