In the summer of 2015, The Northwest Indiana (NWI) Food Bank changed the many lives of low income families. The majority of the students in East Chicago qualify for free or reduced-prices on school meals (breakfast and lunch). However, Summer vacation can pose the threat of under nourishment for some children. NWI Food Bank recognized the need and rose to the occasion.

The Summer Food Service Program, SFSP, is a Food Bank of NWI program funded by FEC. This program is a division of the organization’s larger Youth Hungry Relief program. The program enables students from low-income families to receive a cold breakfast and hot lunch from Monday-Friday throughout their summer break. 225 students under the age of 18 received meals.

However, that’s not all that SFSP did in 2015.  There was also a fundraiser called, Superhero Soiree. This event included music, food, beverages, activities and a silent auction. The purpose of this affair was a display of gratitude to the sponsors and supporters of the Food Bank. In addition, funds were raised to combat hunger. This year, the event brought in over $12,000 to help feed needy citizens of northwest Indiana.

These occasions were just two of many. And above and beyond events, the NWI Food Bank works tirelessly daily to offer educational, nutritional, and recreational activities to end hunger in Northwest Indiana.
