Throughout the summer, the City of East Chicago offered several enrichment programs to area youth. To celebrate the end of a productive season, Mayor Anthony Copeland and public works staff met with these youth who actively participated in these programs for a barbeque at Washington Park. Attendees participated in programs such as the Summer Youth Employment Program and the Stars Summer Camp Program.

East Chicago’s Summer Youth Employment Program is structured around keeping the city clean and at the beginning of the summer, 135, youth, ages 18-22, were hired to participate. For some, it marked their first paid employment.

The Stars Summer Camp program teaches participants about arts, crafts and athletics. New to this year’s program was the “The First Tee,” which focused on teaching youth the fundamentals of golf.

These programs were funded by the mayor, Foundations of East Chicago, the Office of Redevelopment and East Chicago Parks and Recreation Department.
