In 2016, the Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) was honored to receive the Sue Panther Award from the Purdue University Northwest (PNW) TRIO/Educational Opportunity Program. Each year, the University gives this award to an organization that champions education for all.

Since 1997, FEC has been promoting health/safety, community enrichment and education in the city of East Chicago. This is done through providing grants to organizations that work to make a difference, and also through the FEC scholarship program.

The FEC scholarship program has awarded over $6,000,000 in college scholarships to East Chicago students. These scholarships provide students whose families may not be able to afford college with the opportunity to pursue their educational dreams. This consistent dedication to providing a college education for all is why FEC received the Sue Panther Award.

FEC has also provided grant funding to Purdue Northwest programs, such as the Educational Talent Search Program and the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program which assist students from grades 6 through graduate school with paying for college.

This award was presented at the annual PNW EOP/TRIO awards ceremony and was accepted by several FEC members.
