April 25, 2019 marked the Foundations of East Chicago’s (FEC) 22nd scholarship program celebration. The evening saw 100 students from East Chicago, Indiana collectively receive over $2 million dollars in college scholarships.
This year’s scholarships were awarded to students from six Northwest Indiana high schools, including Bishop Noll Institute, Griffith, Merrillville, Morton, Whiting High School and East Chicago Central.
High school students attending an accredited institution each received four-year renewable awards, or a two-year renewable scholarship to pursue a trade. Adult students, or those who are returning to college, continuing their education, or pursuing a trade also have an opportunity to receive an FEC one-year scholarship.
FEC has been awarding scholarships to East Chicago students since 1998. In total, the organization has distributed over $10 million in scholarship funds since inception.
FEC is a nonprofit organization which awards scholarships to students and grants for community programs to 501 (c) (3) organizations. FEC receives a percentage of Ameristar Hotel and Casino’s annual revenue to be used on projects and programs that give back to the people of East Chicago.
