Top 20, Inc. is an organization in East Chicago that works to help local young girls build confidence and lead healthy lifestyles. This summer, Top 20 is offering a free summer camp, called Top 20 II Health and Wellness Camp, to middle and high school aged girls who live in the city of East Chicago.

The camp is running from June 6 to June 11. The girls start each day with a healthy lunch in the East Chicago Central High School cafeteria. Then they head across the street to the East Chicago Fitness Center. While here, the girls learn and participate in various types of workouts.

Perhaps the most notable aspects of the camp are the daily dance rehearsals with Alfred Baker, the founder and instructor at the West Indian Dance Company in Chicago. Mr. Baker and dancer Vickie Casanova will lead the girls in practicing traditional West Indian dance routines.

At the end of the week, the campers perform their dance routine for an audience at Indiana University Northwest in Gary.

The goal of the camp is not only to provide dance education to East Chicago girls, but to teach them about healthy lifestyle choices as well. The introduction to various healthy meals and exercise techniques work to instill a basic knowledge of how to be healthy. All of this is accomplished in a fun, social atmosphere where the girls also get to practice dance.
