Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) scholarship recipient Shantanece Ellis believes that helping each other is vital for the growth and development of her hometown of East Chicago and she has taken that positivity with her to Bloomington.
Shantanece is currently working towards a Bachelor’s degree in English from Indiana University. She received the FEC scholarship while attending East Chicago Central High School. It is what allowed her to begin following her dreams.
“I could not afford to pay for college out-of-pocket,” said Shantanece. “Thanks to the FEC scholarship, I will graduate with no debt or student loans to pay back.”
This will allow Shantanece to continue her education in law school so that she can work towards helping others like FEC has helped her.
“Few cities have this type of opportunity for their students,” said Shantanece. “East Chicago giving back to East Chicago is very important for the betterment of our city.”
FEC has been giving back to the community in the form of scholarships since 1999. There are several different types of scholarships awarded to students. Many are renewable for four years providing that the students maintain a 2.5 grade point average.
