Teach for America (TFA) is a nonprofit organization that has been helping students in low-income communities across the country since 1989. Now, TFA is partnering with several local organizations and school districts to make a difference in Northwest Indiana.
TFA places trained, certified teachers in classrooms to supplement the education that students are receiving. The mission of this program is to create education equality across all school districts in all zip codes of the United States.
To help students from low-income backgrounds in Northwest Indiana, TFA has created relationships with other nonprofits. Foundations of East Chicago (FEC), a nonprofit organization in East Chicago, IN which works to help those in the community through the distribution of grants and scholarships, has awarded a grant to the TFA branch that will be working in Northwest Indiana.
One of the main goals of the Northwest Indiana faction of TFA is to recruit FEC scholarship recipients who have graduated college or will graduate within the next two years to serve as TFA teachers. This would benefit the teachers by giving them unique work experience and allowing them to give back to their communities. TFA students would also benefit from this pairing because the teachers would have an intimate understanding of life in Northwest Indiana.
The Northwest Indiana schools that TFA will be working with are Lighthouse Charter Network, School City of East Chicago, School City of Hammond, Gary Community School Corporation, Aspire Charter Academy and 21st Century Charter Academy.
