Jay Woods, a graduate from Indiana State University, applied for the Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) scholarship because he knew he would need assistance with living expenses. FEC helped him limit the financial stress by awarding him the scholarship during his final year at East Chicago Central High School in 2002, so he could focus on academics and sports.
During his time at Indiana State University, Jay studied business management where he said that many memories and a lifetime of friendships were made. He initially received a scholarship for football, but was happy to learn that FEC was also assisting him in his academics. He originally was pursuing a career in professional football, but eventually sought out a career in law enforcement. He is currently a Hammond police officer in the K-9 division.
Jay recommends that every high school student apply for an FEC scholarship because every bit helps. It’s important to apply to get the good start that incoming college students deserve.
“Thank you for believing in me and thank you for continuing to do this for young men and women in our city,” Jay said.
One way current high school students can find scholarships like Jay did is through FEC’s Scholarship, College and Career Resource Fair which is in partnership with the School City of East Chicago. The event will be held on January 20 and all high school juniors and seniors are invited to explore their options.
