Dunes Learning Center has offered a program called Mighty Acorns for several years. This program involves the center working with local schools to coordinate field trips for 3rd-6th graders to teach them about environmental science in a more hands-on way. Last year, East Chicago elementary schools joined the program with the help of funding by FEC. Approximately 324 East Chicago students were able to learn about environmental restoration in the area in which they live through the program. These students were also offered membership to the Mighty Acorns summer program at a greatly reduced rate as a reward for their participation.
