We are thrilled to share an exciting update from the East Chicago Citizens Police Academy, made possible by a grant from the Foundations of East Chicago. The goal of the program is to recruit citizens aged 18 and older from East Chicago to join in a ten-week program aimed at supporting the police in reducing criminal activity in our city.

As crime rates continue to rise nationwide, the power of community involvement cannot be overstated. Each individual’s contribution serves as an extra pair of eyes and ears, creating tangible change in East Chicago. Since the inception of the Citizens Academy, the program has impacted the lives of around 400 East Chicago citizens. Through ongoing participation, the program is fostering a strong relationship between the East Chicago Police Department and the community, striving to create a safe and peaceful environment for all residents.

This year, the program kicked off with an exciting new addition! Twenty-one youths, aged seven to twelve, participated in a special weeklong camp at the Boys and Girls Club. By introducing young minds to their work early on, the aim is to build bonds of trust and understanding, rather than instilling fear of law enforcement. The children had the opportunity to interact with various departments, including the K-9 Unit, Fire department, and SWAT team, gaining a firsthand perspective on the valuable contributions of East Chicago’s dedicated men and women in blue.
