Going to college allows students to be whatever they want. It can be especially rewarding receiving a degree in a field that provides the opportunity to help others. This is the feeling that Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) scholarship recipient Makeda Winfield is anticipating upon her graduation from Purdue University – West Lafayette.

Makeda received her FEC scholarship while attending East Chicago Central High School. She is now in the process of obtaining her degree in Speech Language and Hearing Sciences with the intent of becoming a Speech Pathologist or Audiologist. Both of these careers would give Makeda a way of helping others.
Makeda is very grateful for the financial and emotional support she has received from FEC during her educational journey and hopes to be able to support others while working in her field after graduation.

“Not only has the FEC scholarship provided me with monetary assistance, it also provided me with a strong support system from the staff,” said Makeda.

FEC has been issuing scholarships to East Chicago students since 1999. The organization currently awards scholarships of varying amounts to local student to assist with tuition expenses at any college or university in the country.

“FEC is dedicated to helping students from our city succeed,” said Makeda. “As long as you do your part, FEC will stand behind you.”
