For over 20 years, Foundations of East Chicago has been awarding scholarships to hard-working high school seniors. As each student receives their award, the hope is that they utilize it to better themselves and the world around them. Joshua Martin, recipient of an FEC scholarship, is doing just that!

Joshua received a four-year renewable $2500.00 scholarship from 2011-2015 and attended Indiana University Bloomington.  He majored in Biology and animal behavior and he ensured to enjoy everything college had to offer. He says “college was a time of growth and learning for me. I had a lot of fun, made lifelong friends, and had volunteer experiences that changed my outlook on life and shaped my desire to go into medicine.”

Aside from wanting our students to receive a great education, through the scholarship program, FEC’s mission is to alleviate the financial stress that a college education can have on a student. Joshua thanks FEC for this exact reason but also appreciates the support network that FEC provides. “Not only did the FEC scholarship take some of the financial burden of college off of me and my family, but it also connected me to a support system. Whenever I saw members back home, they encouraged me to keep striving to reach my goals.” He also has a message for students, “you should explore all outlets for financial aid for college but prioritize organizations whose main focus is to support you and your community. FEC does this and more and will start you on the path to succeed!”

Currently, Joshua is a medical scribe at Oak Street Health. He has been accepted into medical school and will be attending in the fall. Foundations of East Chicago is very proud of Joshua and is excited to follow his progress! Keep up the amazing work!
