The Foundations of East Chicago (FEC) scholarship helped Denzel Smith, a graduate of East Chicago Central, fulfill his dream of attending college in Florida.

He is in his second year at Bethune-Cookman University, studying religion and philosophy. He chose the university not because it’s located in Daytona Beach, FL, (even though he says it “definitely has its perks”), but because of the reputation of the school and opportunities it could provide.

“It is rich with culture and has a legacy that is second to none. I have grown as a man and matured in an array of areas.” Denzel said. He added that attending an HBCU (Historically Black College or University) has provided him with a wealth of knowledge and experiences he uses daily.

Denzel currently serves as the Student Body Vice-President and is the President of the Delta Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.

After graduation in 2020, he plans on returning to “the great city of East Chicago” and will attend Columbia College in Chicago. He intends on obtaining a master’s degree in theatre arts.

He would like to tell FEC, “Thank you all so much for constantly investing into the people of East Chicago. The work that is done does not go unnoticed. I, along with so many others, are extremely grateful for the love and care that FEC has shown. I will forever advocate for my city. It is my hope that I will be able to sow a seed into FEC.”
