Along with a partnership with the Salvation Army and Home Depot in Hammond, Foundations of East Chicago sponsored the establishment of a Veterans Memorial Garden. The project also includes other community partners, including Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, Neighborhoods Inc. and the United Way and Grow it in East Chicago Coalition.
After being built by Home Depot, the first raised bed was placed on site with the assistance of an assembly line of participants.
The Salvation Army East Chicago Brass Band performed the National Anthem and local veterans assisted with the first planting by placing flags around the four corners of the bed.
