Since 2006, the Foundations of East Chicago has awarded $184,000 to Healthy East Chicago, Inc. who serves as the East Chicago Fitness Center’s managing sponsor.  This funding is used to support local certified trainers and purchase new, state-of-the-art equipment to replace outdated equipment.

Currently, the Fitness Center facility – located behind Central High School at 1100 West Columbus Drive in East Chicago, IN, has over 1500 members. On average, 50-75 community residents visit the facility daily. This number does not include East Chicago High School students, who also utilize the facility daily. During school and after-school hours mark the periods when students are most active at the facility, with the remainder of the time being open to residents of East Chicago, free of charge.

The 15,400 square-foot facility maintains 10,000 square-feet of premium gym space; therefore people don’t have long waits to use the equipment. The facility also boasts several flat screen televisions which adds to workout enjoyment. Membership is free to the community. In order to join, applicants must submit a doctor’s note stating the date of their last physical along with their application.

For more information about the East Chicago Fitness Center, contact the facility’s director, Coach Richard Peterson and staff at 219.391.4039.
