While many families have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, there are 49 million Americans who face hunger and so many families who struggle to put a meal on their table on a daily basis, let alone on Thanksgiving Day. Thanks in part to grants awarded through Foundations of East Chicago, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana is working diligently to battle hunger and support East Chicago families in need this holiday season.

Working within the confines of a mere 12,000 square-feet, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana distributes approximately 5 million pounds of food annually which is the equivalent to 4,221,182 meals served. Traveling approximately 140 miles each day with a fleet of only five trucks, 508,000 of that food made its way into East Chicago this past year. Currently, nine local churches (*see list of locations below), Salvation Army and Catholic Family Services receive food from the funding received by the Food Bank in order to provide hunger relief to individuals and families in East Chicago.

Since 2009, more than 22,000 individuals have been served by East Chicago food pantries.
