The Silver Sneakers Fitness Program, now a product of Healthways, Inc., was founded on the premise that for health care to be viable in the long run, preventive, cost effective measures needed to be incorporated into the continuum of care. Silver Sneakers’ unique business model of an accountable, population-based exercise program, quickly cultivated a niche between managed care and insurance companies throughout the U.S. and realized its vision of improving the health and well-being of everyone the program touches. Through the support of the Foundations of East Chicago, the Silver Sneaker program is a success.
“Getting this grant was perfect timing,” said R.N. Fran Clark, manager of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at St. Catherine’s Hospital.
The Silver Sneakers program empowers older adults to take charge of their health and maintain an active, independent lifestyle. The program is now available in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico at approximately 10,000 fitness and wellness centers across the country, as well as community centers and churches. Through a unique reciprocity agreement, Silver Sneakers members also have access to all of the sites in the country. Many sites offer amenities such as fitness equipment, treadmills and free weights, and the signature fitness program classes, designed specifically for older adults and taught by certified instructors.
Thanks in part through a grant from the Foundations of East Chicago, the hospital-based program has been provided with a comprehensive facility. The Foundations also covers the $45.00 orientation fee.
“Without the support of the Foundations we wouldn’t have everything we need. It was definitely a blessing,” said R.N. Fran Clark, manager of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program at St. Catherine’s Hospital.
