In 2003, a group of ambitious East Chicago 8th graders traveled to Annapolis, MD to attend the week-long enrichment program “Reach for Tomorrow.” Supported by the U.S. Naval Academy, “Reach for Tomorrow” primarily focuses on educating students about opportunities for naval careers while also enhancing their knowledge of math, science and engineering. In order to attend, students must meet certain criteria such as performing 25 hours of community service before they can become eligible.

The program is intended to be the start of a multiyear mentorship that is designed to achieve specific outcomes for students such as developing a resume and taking SAT prep classes.
