Almost everyone will end up in a career during their lifetime but far fewer people will experience what they believe to be their true calling. Even fewer of these people will be able to turn this calling into their reality which is exactly what Cheryl Smith, the founder and CEO of Feed My Sheep Resource Center, Inc did.

Smith said that, at first, she didn’t realize what she was supposed to do. She had a feeling that she needed to do something but several years went by before she realized that she was being called to help the people of East Chicago.

Smith’s journey to realizing her calling began in 1997. While driving, Smith remembers something telling her to “feed my sheep”. Weeks later, Smith heard the same phrase included in a church sermon and understood that she had to do something. However, at this point, she was not yet sure what exactly she needed to do.

Smith spent the next several years working for various church ministry programs. Although she knew this work was worthwhile, she still felt as though she hadn’t quite figured out what “feed my sheep” was supposed to mean for her.

Finally, in 2013, Smith realized what she needed to do. She needed to help people in the area learn about bettering themselves. The result of this revelation was the beginning of Feed My Sheep Resource Center, Inc.

The goal of Feed My Sheep Resource Center, Inc. is to help underprivileged citizens of East Chicago to hone their social skills and to become more self-sufficient. The organization also offers recreational classes and activities for people of all ages.

The organization was able to get off the ground with grant funding provided by Foundations of East Chicago in 2014. Feed My Sheep Resource Center, Inc. hopes to begin to offer even more programs for the people of East Chicago.
