In 2001, as part of an initiative supported by the East Chicago organization Youth Government and Building Trades, student volunteers from Central High School participated in the project “Student House” and the benefits to the East Chicago community were two-fold. Not only were the student volunteers able to gain hands-on experience by working alongside skilled, local contractors; they were also able to refurbish the community of East Chicago.
